Over the last five years, things have visibly changed for the better in Mnembo, Malawi. New brick houses with iron roofs are springing up everywhere, replacing the old-style, thatched mud-houses. Paths are busy with bicycles, often loaded with coils of iron for new roofs or baskets full of vegetables enroute to market. This new found vibrancy is the result of the Oxfam-funded irrigation scheme.

“Now we have access to water during the dry months we are able to plant several crops in a year – wheat, rice and tomatoes.  We no longer see the problems other people face. Because of our irrigation system we are protected,” says Charles Kenani, pictured left in his thriving rice field.
