Glorious goat dung!

Fred Kabambe is a happy man. Last year he harvested eight bags of maize and this year, even if the rainfall is scarce, he expects to beat that. Previously, like most local farmers, Fred struggled to harvest even one bag of maize.

Now Fred is growing a new early-maturing, high-yielding type of maize, but the secret of his success is not that alone. Having received a goat thanks to Oxfam Ireland’s Unwrapped shoppers, he is now able to make proper compost manure. Fred mixes old maize stalks, water and goat dung and in three months he has quality manure to help him grow his crops.
“Now I can have food throughout the year and a source of income too” Fred says.

Moosic to a family’s ears!

Rose Kaluma is married with three children. She has received a cow thanks to Oxfam Ireland Unwrapped shoppers

'The cow has made a big difference to me; with the money I get from selling the milk I've been able to do lots of things. For example: the garden we have is relatively big and I've been able to hire labour when we need it; I can also buy fertiliser for the garden now; and I even managed to buy a second-hand bicycle…. Also, of course, I can use the cow manure for my crops as well. This year we are also able to buy food, because, as I said, our harvest hasn't been enough.’ says Rose.

I hope the scheme can be extended to more people here. I'm looking forward to a time when I have more cows and I can really use them to look after my family and myself for the future.'
